However, while getting deeper into the book, it is harder to stay focused on what is actually going on. The plot is creative, and Walker has done a good job of building the suspense needed to keep the readers on the edges of their seats. There are also Libby and Sara, the pre-teenage daughters of a “doomsday prepper.” There’s Catherine, a specialist in psychiatric disorders, and Mei, a college freshman who is lonely until the spread of the virus gives her life purpose along with another student, she dedicates herself to assisting others. There’s Ben and Annie, a young couple new to town, and their baby. “The Dreamers” introduces us to many characters. ![]() ![]() A city-wide quarantine is issued, and now no one is able to enter or leave the town. ![]() Helicopters and Humvees and news crews, the secondary symptoms of any catastrophe, arrive. Not long later, hundreds of citizens of Santa Lora have been infected by this sleeping sickness. The mysterious virus spreads further throughout the town in Karen Thompson Walker’s novel, “The Dreamers,” at another dorm-room party a few days later. The girl falls asleep, and never wakes up. However, this isn’t like any other infection. The first instance where the virus presents itself is at a college party.
